What is a Tyvek wristband?

One of the most commonly found access control wristbands on the market today are made of Tyvek.

What is Tyvek?

Tyvek is a synthetic material made of flashspun, high-density, polythene fibres. It was first discovered by Du Pont researcher Jim White in 1955 and trademarked in 1965. Tyvek is often used for medical instruments, as protective overalls as well as for building and construction sites. Although it looks and feels like paper, it is classified as a plastic and therefore cannot be recycled together with paper.

Types of Tyvek Wristbands

Tyvek wristbands are the most economical option when considering wristbands for an event. There are a variety of options to choose from depending on your needs and budget. Depending on which wristband provider you’re working with, will determine your choices available. The most popular size however is 2.5cm wide, with 25 bands on a single sheet. The wristbands can either be plain or in full colour with a striped or solid background. These wristbands can be branded, coded and made as unique as one wants for an event. The ability to customise these wristbands so extensively decreases the chances of duplication significantly.

Security Features

In our article Types of Wristband Security Features we discussed the reason why Tyvek wristbands are a good option for events. They use an adhesive to seal so once the wristband is on it cannot be taken off, as it would damage and shred the band. Tyvek wristbands also cannot be torn or ripped and the only way to get them off is with a pair of scissors. Once this is done however it cannot be given to another person to wear.

Tyvek wristbands are best used for events that are 1-3 days long. They can be manufactured and branded incredibly quickly and are therefore a popular choice with concerts, nightclubs, schools, tour groups and crowd control. They are water resistant and durable and their bold designs assist greatly where immediate identification is needed such as at busy concerts and events.
